birthing choices

I was answering a question posted over on a local forum, and I thought I'd share it here. The question was to give birth baturally or to have an epidural...

I am speaking for myself, from my own experience.

I have had two babies-
one (induced) birth, ended with an epidural (and c-section)
one all-natural birth

If I were doing it again, I would again go without the meds. By going without, I really experienced my body's power. It was amazing to think that I was able to have that much energy rolling through me. There is pain, but it is also a very interesting and cool process, and to me, it was worthwhile to feel that in its entirety, and not wonder about what I might miss. Now, I do feel a sense of pride and empowerment that I did it, and when I waver and feel weak about something I am struggling with, I remind myself that I can do it, because if I could handle birth, I can handle anything. I feel stronger because of my experience.

Again, though, that is only my opinion, about what is right for me.
No one can or should tell you what to choose. You have to be utterly convinced that it is what you want. So, try to shut out the other voices of influence, and make your own decision. Whatever you decide, it will be right for you. If you decide to do it naturally, I would recommend Ina May's Guide to Childbirth to give you a better understanding of what your body will go through in the birthing process.

Wonderfully put Beth. I would loved to have had a natural birth. You are such a wise and insightful woman. I'm so happy to get to meet you in person!

You rock Beth. I sort of wish I had one more chance to go med free...

I love you Beth. I had two with meds that didn't work, so it ended up med-free and one with the medications actually working. I personally LOVED when the meds were working. You are a strong woman!!
